SweetGerm

SweetGerm, stompbox version .

A few years ago I was working on the two transistors fuzz, and the singing overdrive these fuzz generated when they are set to low gain made me imagine sweeter applications.
Anything else intrigued me : their schematics were similar to those of preamplifiers you could see in mixers and tape recorders from the seventies… So I rolled up the reasoning : We could get a tasty sound by combining the fullness of Hifi circuitry and the texture of low gain fuzzboxes…

Using selected Russian germanium transistors brought the project to a successful conclusion, providing an organic rendering : SweetGerm is here to feed your sound !

General features

3 tone presets : Bright ; Jazzy ; Mighty.
2 intuitive controls : Body ; Presence.
It lightens humbuckers or give body to single coil pickups, giving from a clear sound to a just fat enough overdrive.
Germanium amplification compresses smoothly and reacts to your playing, keeping the tone of the guitar.

SweetGerm works with all standard DC power supplies, 7 to 12V, negative ground.
2.1mm DC coaxial plug, center negative. Typical consumption : 8mA.

As every germanium device, SweetGerm will give its best after being on for 5 to 10 minutes : the delay to let currents and temperature diffuse inside the germanium cristals !

3 versions…

Basic version                                     + Boo  version                                  Bass version

The basic version contains the whole of SweetGerm, with its presets and controls.

The “+ Boo” and “Bass” versions are preamps keeping always active,
featuring a boost stomp switch.
SweetGerm + Boo : for all guitars, bass and double bass.
SweetGerm Bass : specifically for electric bass.

In these versions, the boost effect is adjustable by a fourth potentiometer.
The preset selection switch is then located on the left side of the enclosure.

Controls and presets

Just two knobs to control the whole sound !

Body : the body, the fat and the grain of the sound.
Works from 100 to 600 Hz, and determines the thickness of the fundamentals …
Placed before preamp : acts simultaneously on the tone, and on the fat of the overdrive.
Presence : the contour and the level of treble.
Softens the tone under 9:00,
Increases harmonics between 9:00 and 12:00, then the high-mids beyond 12:00.
Acts little on the overdrive, therefore keeps a clarity up on the fat.

Specialized presets in each version

basic version: :

Bright : moderate treble boost
To compensate too flabby pickups and amps, or sharpen your own playing.
To play in electric styles requiring some brilliant tone.
Jazzy : widerange tone, with slightly hollowed mids …
It is the generic tone of SweetGerm …
Beyond jazz : for those who like fleshy sound, with some singing clarity above.
Mighty : slight overall boost, with a specific roundness at 150 Hz.
For skinny sounding guitars, and to give plaisure to well-planted sound lovers.
Easy and smooth overdrive, with a more organic dynamic than TS9®-like stompboxes.

SweetGerm +Boo version :

Bright : moderate treble boost
Similar to the basic model, a little more peaked.
Normal : widerange tone, with slightly hollowed mids …
Just like the basic model.
Bite : More mids around 900Hz.
Increases the biting of sound, while bringing a vintage color.
Useful to feed the granularity of bridge pickups.
Boost stomp switch :
Switches a “mighty” effect that boosts both the bottom of sound, the level, and the drive.

SweetGerm Bass version :

Old School : fleshy grain and generous low mids.
Helps to get the roundness of vintage overdriven amps
The “presence” control nevertheless allows to keep or boost a clear attack.
Modern : the contemporary contour.
A typical notch towards 600Hz, but not too deep : no notes are weaken !
“Body” and “Presence” shape the contour on both sides.
Boost stomp switch :
Switches a “mighty” effect like you would make a Bassman ® or an Ampeg ® roar !
